NTT DATA FOUNDATION Honors ALINTI with the Global eAwards 2024, the Peruvian Startup Generating Energy from Plants for Rural Communities

  • ALINTI is a startup focused on providing renewable energy solutions to communities with limited or no access to electricity.
  • In Latin America, approximately 20% to 25% of the population lives in rural areas.
  • Access to electricity remains a challenge for 675 million people worldwide.
  • This is the first time the award ceremony has been held in Colombia.

In a historic ceremony held for the first time in Colombia, the NTT DATA FOUNDATION’s Global eAwards 2024 was presented to ALINTI, an innovative Peruvian startup that has developed groundbreaking technology to generate electricity from plants. The Global eAwards, one of the most prestigious accolades in technology for social impact, recognizes ALINTI for its potential to transform the lives of communities affected by energy poverty across Latin America and beyond.

ALINTI has developed a revolutionary bioelectric cell that leverages the natural processes of plants to produce sustainable energy. The system uses an electrolyte in the soil and graphite electrodes, harnessing microorganisms that decompose organic matter and trigger an oxidation-reduction reaction, known as REDOX. This process releases electrons, which are then converted into electric current. This innovation is presented as a pioneering solution for communities with limited or electricity access—an issue affecting 675 million people globally.

In Latin America, where approximately 25% of the population resides in rural areas, this technology could have a profound impact, helping to alleviate energy poverty and its adverse effects on education, security, and economic development. ALINTI competed against finalists from six Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico), winning first place, a prize of 100,000 euros, and access to an exclusive acceleration program provided by the NTT DATA FOUNDATION.

“This recognition inspires us to continue our mission of bringing electricity to Latin American households and promoting sustainable development,” said Hernán Asto Cabezas, CEO and founder of ALINTI.

“With this recognition, we aim to support innovative projects that leverage technology to benefit society. It reaffirms our commitment to advancing technology and entrepreneurship while positively impacting communities,” stated Roberto Dañino, President of the NTT DATA FOUNDATION.

With 94% of Global eAwards-winning projects remaining active since 2008 and 58% securing additional funding of over 2 million euros, Global eAwards provides strategic and high-impact financial support for ventures with strong growth potential. ALINTI is positioning Peru and Latin America at the forefront of global innovation, highlighting the region's capacity to address critical challenges through sustainable solutions.
