CEOs and Generative AI: Transforming Technology into a Strategic Management Partner
- September 11, 2024
The revolution is underway, and it's quickly accelerating. Generative AI is not just transforming how we work and live, it's opening up a world of possibilities. The best is yet to come: this technology is a blank canvas, a vast field to explore, research, and discover competitive advantages. It's a future full of promise and potential.
For organizations, this innovation extends beyond the responsibilities of technology-related areas. The best results will be achieved if generative AI's capabilities are aligned with the business's needs and purpose. This is why the CEO's involvement in the adoption strategy is not just important; it's crucial. It is the key to success, and it is not something to observe from the sidelines: the company's future is yours.
In this regard, the first step a CEO should take is to deploy transparent communication, reaching all corners of the organization, about the importance, scope, and impact of generative AI, as well as the purpose of its implementation and the governance mechanisms that will be applied to ensure responsible use. Let me share a personal experience: In our company, we created the GenAI office and decided that it would report directly to me (only two sectors in the entire company do so). This is a resounding message about the relevance this technology has and will have for us.
Clear communication is also vital to reducing resistance and demonstrating that the fear that this technology might replace leaders is unfounded. Human values such as decision-making ability, emotional connection, and inspiration are and will be more necessary than ever.
The fundamental role of GenAI is not to replace humans but to assist them in improving and accelerating their daily tasks. This could include tactical matters such as optimizing email writing or strategic aspects like helping prepare a highly competitive and challenging value proposition or suggesting optimization points in each employee's journey. This is only the beginning – we are witnessing just a glimpse of what is yet to come, and it's a future where humans and AI work hand in hand.
Therefore, another critical aspect is that leaders and employees must understand how to work with this "co-pilot" to multiply their results. Those using this exceptional technology will gain significant advantages over those who do not. Here again, the CEO's role is highlighted. Ideally, they should lead by example and get involved in using and learning this technology.
Much has been said about generative AI. For instance, it is the most disruptive technology humanity has known or the innovation that has been adopted the fastest in history. From a CEO's perspective, it is the fundamental ally that will allow them to accelerate their organization's journey into the future.
