By combining technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced analytics, autonomous operations define a new paradigm that can exponentially boost process growth and efficiency while significantly enhancing organizational competitiveness. When we think about the term “autonomous,” we typically imagine robots working in a factory, driverless vehicles, or a drone making deliveries. However, the concept of “Autonomous Operations” (AO), though emerging, is much more complex and offers unprecedented productivity and growth potential for businesses, especially in Latin America.

In this volatile and challenging global context, 39% of business leaders are concerned their companies will not be viable unless they change their operations, and 69% challenge their ability to adapt to market and contextual changes. One alternative to addressing these challenges is advancing toward an Autonomous Operations model.

The Next Station Will Be Autonomous Businesses

Gartner indicates we are moving towards the “Autonomous Business” revolution. We are moving out of the era of “Digital Business,” where the focus was on reinventing products and services, creating new alternatives, and establishing innovative channels for customer engagement. The focus now shifts to who performs the work and who the end customer is, with both roles no longer necessarily requiring human involvement.

Continuous Learning and Improvement

The starting point for companies on the journey toward autonomous businesses lies in Autonomous Operations, processes fully supported by technology, capable of making decisions, and continuously learning. This combination of innovations, including automation, IoT, generative AI (GenAI), and advanced analytics, among other technologies, significantly increases efficiency and productivity and promotes hyper-personalization, offering unique responses to each user according to their specific needs.

Seize the Moment: Taking Action in Latin America

Latin America shows great potential for embracing AO, notably due to its significant AI adoption rates, as indicated by a survey conducted by NTT DATA and MIT Technology Review in September 2023. it is used by 80% of organizations, with another 17.5% planning to implement it this year. However, there is a cultural challenge regarding “total autonomy.” Human oversight will always be necessary to ensure these technologies’ ethical and responsible use.

Nevertheless, the time has come. We recommend beginning with non-essential support activities and scaling up with an agile approach alongside a technology partner. It is absolutely crucial to have a clearly defined purpose for every implementation and to ensure that each project aligns with business requirements.
