Technological developments that profoundly and enduringly changed daily life.

As 2024 nears its end, the year has been shaped by the rapid pace of technological advancements, rivaling the greatest revolutions in human history. In fact, it might be the era that brings about the most profound, lasting, and transformative changes to society.

Topics like AI, edge computing and IoT, quantum computing, digital twins, virtual reality, and augmented reality reality have transcended research centers and became part of everyday life, impacting the general public.

Recently, I witnessed a simple yet striking example of how quickly these developments are shaping our daily lives: my 16-year-old daughter, a high school student, is taking an elective course titled “Introduction to Marketing.” A few days ago, her teacher sent a message to all students, copying their parents, with the subject “Prohibition of Generative AI Tools for Case Studies.” Interestingly, while banning this technology for schoolwork, the same teacher admitted to using AI tools to identify who might have used them.

At NTT DATA, Inc., we believe that these technologies achieve their highest value when used as tools to promote inclusion, justice, and well-being.

For example, in the realm of generative AI, we developed Tsuzumi, a bilingual model (Japanese and English) available on the Azure platform in partnership with Microsoft. It is lighter, faster, and consumes less energy than most other models. We have also supported our clients with specific applications, such as L’Oréal, for whom we created an AI agent that helps customers choose the most suitable beauty products for various occasions.

To unlock AI’s full potential, it is essential to have a solid infrastructure for computing, connectivity, and security. We are also deeply involved in this area. For instance, we developed the Spektra platform, which enables the management of connectivity and security from edge devices to cloud computing and storage environments. Furthermore, NTT Research has developed cutting-edge studies in quantum computing, addressing complex challenges such as post-quantum cryptography.

This more robust infrastructure supports not only AI but also numerous other advanced technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) in distributed environments. We partnered with LATAM Airlines to implement a VR-based training solution for in-flight cabin crew. This innovation delivers greater agility, scalability, and impact in training flight attendants.

However, as I mentioned at the beginning, technology is a means to drive societal progress and must be complemented by other initiatives that create beneficial conditions for all, without exceptions.

In this context, 2024 was a year of significant progress. The IT for Girls program, focused on advancing digital inclusion and helping women enter the workforce, reached a major milestone by benefiting over 10,000 women this year. It was also recognized with the Most Impactful Initiative Award by the Women in Tech association.

Although the year has not yet ended, 2024 has already made a lasting and significant impact. We will continue working to ensure this impact becomes increasingly positive, helping to build the future we aspire to for ourselves and future generations!
