• Dell increases data collection and automation services capabilities for manufacturing industry
  • Dell provides end-to-end IT services to help the manufacturing industry meet customer expectations in large-scale production environments
  • Two customers, Scapa Group and Greene, Tweed, improved accuracy by eliminating manual processes and boosted worker productivity by gaining increased access to real-time data

The increasing availability of data intelligence and data monitoring technology has played a large role in helping the manufacturing industry rapidly evolve its assembly processes to ensure top product quality and real-time results. Every phase of the manufacturing cycle can be closely monitored through the Internet of Things (IoT) and has led various customers to closely examine their own cycles and identify where they can adopt new technologies and services to help increase their productivity excellence. In fact, Gartner forecasts that from an industry perspective, manufacturing, utilities and transportation will be the top three verticals using IoT in 2015; altogether, they will have 736 million connected things in use [1].

"At Dell, we leverage best practices and solutions from our world-class manufacturing expertise, and build industry solutions to enable our manufacturing customers to differentiate in the overall quality of products they are able to produce," said Eric Clark, vice president of commercial industries, Dell Services.

Recently, Dell Services collaborated with two manufacturing customers, Scapa Group and Greene, Tweed, to develop a comprehensive shop floor strategy that helped maximize overall control of their production by increasing visibility, product traceability and reporting.

Scapa Group — a worldwide leading manufacturer of bonding products and adhesive components for applications in the electronics, healthcare, industrial and automotive markets — teamed with Dell to automate manual processes at its newest production facility and upgrade to the latest version of the SAP® Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP MII) application for its shop floor.

Scapa was able to streamline data collection and archiving as well as centralize production processes. Post-installation, Dell continues to work closely with Scapa, offering additional strategic and technical resources. Read the case study here.

For Greene, Tweed — one of the world’s leading manufacturers in thermoplastics, advanced elastomers and composite components — the need to implement a new solution to replace some manual processes was crucial. Greene, Tweed was able to implement SAP MII in 16 weeks to improve statistical process control with real-time quality data recording and analysis on the shop floor.

The Dell team provided the technical skills that the Greene, Tweed needed to start realizing the vision of a fully automated and connected factory. As a result, the company has achieved greater production efficiency, implementing the right technology to help reduce inspection requirements, improve overall visibility and implement more proactive production processes. Additionally, Greene, Tweed improved accuracy by eliminating manual entry of quality control data and boosted worker productivity by gaining increased access to real-time data.
