CaterSOFT needed to improve the availability of its catering software and speed up provisioning to support customer demand.
The company worked with NTT DATA to move its software to the NTT DATA Cloud on Demand solution, which enables fast and simple creation and management of virtual servers.
“Our customers rely on our software to consistently manage parties and other events, around the clock. Using NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, we can ensure high availability at all times, so they don’t have to worry about our service going down.”
Every day, hundreds of catering companies, event planners and conference venues across the globe rely on CaterSOFT software to organise and run weddings, parties and other events. When the software is down, however – even for just a few minutes – things can fall apart quickly for CaterSOFT’s customers. “If our solution is offline at all, our customers suffer,” says Bhanu Kalagara, the technical director for CaterSOFT. “Kitchen teams don’t know what orders they need to prepare or what new orders are coming in. It’s disastrous for their clients, and for us.”
Unfortunately, ensuring high availability was challenging for CaterSOFT, which hosted its software in a data centre. “We had to maintain all the hardware ourselves, so when there were any issues, we had to physically go to the data centre and change the servers ourselves,” says Kalagara. “That caused anywhere from 4 to 24 hours of solution downtime, which was unacceptable to our customers.”
CaterSOFT also wanted to more easily boost capacity. “If we had a big surge in demand from customers, it wasn’t fast or simple for us to meet that demand because of the data centre model,” says Kalagara.
To address these challenges, CaterSOFT chose to work with NTT DATA to create a software-as-a-service (SaaS) version of CaterSOFT software, based on the NTT DATA Cloud on Demand solution. NTT DATA Cloud on Demand enables enterprises to easily create and manage their own virtual servers and quickly gain compute capacity whenever they need it. “We already had a relationship with NTT DATA, and we loved the flexibility of the Cloud on Demand solution. It was an easy decision for us,” says Kalagara.
Using NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, CaterSOFT can offer cloud-based versions of its catering management software to its worldwide customer base. Customers pay a fixed monthly fee to use the software.
The solution is managed by Six Degrees Group, an NTT DATA partner that provides cloud computing and IT solutions. “NTT DATA gives us the underlying technology and support for our platform, and Six Degrees helps manage the entire thing for us,” Kalagara says.
CaterSOFT can now keep its software available 24x7 by relying on NTT DATA Cloud on Demand. As a result, the company’s customers can run their events smoothly and efficiently. “Our customers rely on our software to consistently manage parties and other events, around the clock,” says Kalagara. “Using NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, we can ensure high availability at all times, so they don’t have to worry about our service going down. Since we started working with NTT DATA, we haven’t had any issues. We’re meeting our main business objective, which is eliminating downtime for our customers.”
The company has the flexibility to scale its software resource capacity as needed in response to user demand. “It used to take us multiple hours to add capacity, because we had to physically go to the data centre and take the system down to add new servers. Now, using NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, we simply drag and drop CPUs within a few minutes,” says Kalagara. “And we can do all that without bringing the application offline and impacting our customers.”
CaterSOFT is also saving money by avoiding the need to purchase and maintain hardware. “We’re saving 30 percent on operating costs by using the NTT DATA Cloud on Demand solution, because we’re no longer having to spend money on hardware and maintenance,” Kalagara says.
Additionally, the organisation is spending significantly less time maintaining infrastructure. “When we had physical servers to maintain, we had issues every few months. Now, instead of spending time managing hardware, we can spend more time on what we specialise in – software development.”
CaterSOFT can roll out new products faster than before. “We have grown dramatically since moving to the cloud, because we can launch new products more quickly,” says Kalagara. “Using NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, we have more agility and flexibility, and that will help us accelerate our business growth even more in the months and years to come.”
