Among the 923,000 active physicians across the U.S. in 2017, a common refrain is, “I just want to practice medicine.” Numerous factors are leading them in droves to join large privately owned group practices like ENT and Allergy Associates (ENTA), headquartered in Tarrytown, New York.
After all, it’s hard enough for doctors to keep up with nonstop advances in treatment protocols, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies. Then there are government regulations and insurance reporting requirements that create mountains of paperwork. No wonder so many individual physicians and small practices are throwing in the towel to join much larger ones that can spare them the time and hassle.
These demands are what’s driving ENTA’s growth. It has more than 180 physician specialists, who see more than 80,000 patients a month in 40-plus clinical locations throughout New York and New Jersey. Considered the nation’s top ear, nose, throat, allergy, audiology and sleep practice, its doctors can deliver superior care with same-day patient access that’s uncommon elsewhere. The number of offices has nearly doubled in less than a decade, with more coming.
To deliver high-quality healthcare in growing volumes, high-performance information technology, systems and processes are critical. They are also vital to attracting the very best physician specialists from across the U.S. A team of 10 IT professionals headed by Rick Keifer, senior director of technology, is in charge of that, supported by NTT DATA. In his nine years with ENTA, it has nearly doubled the number of offices and expects even more in the future.ENTA uses a pair of NextGen Healthcare systems — electronic health records (EHR) and electronic practice management (EPM) — to keep its doctors productive. These systems help them deliver the high-quality patient care that they’ve invested so much of their lives and financial resources to do.
The practice first deployed the NextGen systems in 2004, assisted by a predecessor organization of NTT DATA. According to Kiefer, the name changes have been cosmetic, while the services have stayed expert and responsive — leading to a new five-year agreement, even after a competitive RFP and review. He found cheaper vendors, but decided they lacked the service quality he had come to expect.
What has changed, however, is the fact that ENTA is moving its NextGen systems to a new, private virtual hosting environment with multiple redundancies in highly secure NTT DATA centers. Before, ENTA operated its data center in a shared domain with NTT DATA helping to manage it. Keifer expects the move will help save millions in both capital expense and headcount costs over the life of the agreement.
