Deriving actionable insights -- correlations, trends, outliers, etc. -- in real time from terabytes of big data -- operational, transactional, structured, unstructured -- is vital to success for businesses of all sizes across all industries in today’s digitally driven, always-on, Internet-of-everything business world.

Mobility in general, and tablets in particular, are great enablers of the analytics/BI expansion within the enterprise. Data visualization – key to self-service analytics/BI

Earlier this year global revenue in the business intelligence (BI) and analytics market was forecasted to reach $16.9 billion in 2016, an increase of 5.2 % from 2015.

Recent advances in automated data curation and management make data ingestion, preparation, and discovery quicker, and lessen reliance on data scientists to execute complex analytics modeling and BI reporting.

In tandem with this, an ever-broadening array of intuitive data visualization tools has helped to extend self-service analytics/BI from the C-level to frontline workers – and with this extension, sparking a marked increase in analytics/BI use-case validation.

Through 2020, according to IDC, as reported in Forbes, spending on self-service visual discovery and data preparation tools will grow 2.5x faster than traditional IT-controlled tools for similar functionality.

The SAP BI tool

In an interview with ASUG News back in 2015, Ty Miller, SAP VP of product management for Lumira, acknowledged that SAP has a collection of BI tools that is causing some confusion among SAP customers.

After giving assurance that SAP has no plans to end-of-life existing SAP BI clients (with the exception of Desktop Intelligence), Miller informed SAP customers to “expect SAP to start converging all these tools […] with the end-goal of having “five basic BI clients for various tasks.”

The Roambi Integration Advantage

As stated in SAP’s press release announcing the acquisition of Roambi, the deal is in direct line with SAP’s commitment to bring mobile access to analytics to everyone while, at the same time, enabling business users to benefit from “consumer-grade experience and enterprise-scale performance.”

It is not incidental that along with announcing the acquisition of Roambi, SAP also unveiled a new version of SAP Predictive Analytics that includes native Spark modeling to dramatically increase performance and speed while lowering the cost and complexity of analyzing data in Hadoop-based environments, and a limited time trade-in offering for companies interested in switching to SAP BusinessObjects Cloud (formerly known as Cloud for Analytics).

Clearly, all three announcements contribute to SAP’s overall product strategy designed to help businesses get beyond limited desktop analytic tools and move to a modern, built-for-the-cloud analytics/BI solution that is accessible to (and easily consumed by) all employees throughout the enterprise.

Given the success of SAP's BusinessObjects Mobile, which provides a more powerful analytics/BI environment than Roambi, the question remains, why does SAP need Roambi?

Curiously, it is not Roambi’s markedly prettier interface (though good looks never hurt). Rather, the great value Roambi delivers to SAP and SAP customers is its extensive data integration capabilities.

Roambi is among the few (if not the only) analytics/BI tools that can access data already modeled and configured in other BI platforms. In addition to integration with BusinessObjects and SAP HANA, Roambi features built-in integrations with Microsoft BI, IBM Cognos and the pharmaceutical-industry specific Veeva platform, among many others.

The Roambi adds the following to the SAP’s mobile BI portfolio:

  • A gorgeous set of prebuilt visualizations for quick deployment of mobile dashboards.
  • A cloud-based back end that can connect to a variety of data and BI sources.
  • The capability to create data-rich, interactive, eBook-like publications.

The data required for effective decision making resides in numerous places throughout the enterprise – databases, data warehouses, operational applications, transactional systems, the Internet/Intranet, etc. Realizing the promise of analytics/BI necessitates pulling all of this disparate data together in real time without disrupting business.

As the integration capabilities of analytics/BI solutions improve and more data sources can be pulled into the analytics/BI loop, the potential new business-uses for analytics/BI expands, the cost of implementing analytics/BI comes down, the time to value of analytics/BI speeds up, and the ROI of analytics/BI grows.
