The limitations of traditional, disk-based databases are well known. They are costly CPU hogs that pose daunting power and cooling challenges. While good at storing persistent, structured data, traditional databases are woefully inadequate for business intelligence purposes. They take too long to query and analyze large amounts of data.

Unlike traditional databases that read and write off of hard disks, in-memory databases move information to be processed in the main random access memory (RAM) of dedicated servers rather than in complicated relational databases operating on comparatively slow disk drives.

By storing data in-memory rather than on hard disks, queries and analytics can be performed 100x – 1000x faster, and at a fraction of the cost.

In step with Moore’s Law, we now have 64-bit chip systems that can accommodate terabytes of RAM. Moreover, CPU power, RAM, and storage costs have all plummeted.
These new dynamics should inspire every business to re-examine its architectural assumptions.

Today it is feasible to simply load all enterprise data into an in-memory database, doing away with the bugaboo of latency and eliminating the cost and complexity of dealing with caching disks, conserving disk space, and making sure what is changed in memory is accurately recorded on disk.

  • The global market for in-memory computing is expected to grow from $2.21 billion in 2013 to $13.23 billion in 2018, at a CAGR of 43.0% during this forecast period. (MarketsandMarkets)
  • The worldwide high performance computing (HPC) market, which includes in-memory computing as a fast-growing segment, is expected to grow at an 8.3% CAGR reaching $44 billion in 2020 and will generate $220 Billion in revenues over the period 2015-2020. (MarketResearchMedia)
  • The global in-memory computing market will grow at a CAGR of 43.86 percent over the period 2013-2018. (TechNavio)
  • The IMC market in Europe is estimated to grow from $783.2 million in 2013 to $3226.16 million by 2018, at a CAGR of 32.7% from 2013 to 2018, while the North America IMC market is expected to grow from $880.1 million in 2013 to $3873.2 million in 2018 at a CAGR of 34.5% during the given period.   • IMC is likely to be adopted by at least 35% of midsize and large organizations through 2015, up from less than 10 percent in 2012. (Gartner)

  • SAP HANA has the highest adoption.
    • SAP HANA currently has more than 7,200 customers, doubling from only one year ago.
    • SAP HANA Cloud Platform has quickly built momentum with more than 1,500 customers.
    • Adoption of SAP HANA by startups has soared, with more than 2,100 using the SAP HANA platform today.
    • There are more than 850,000 active users of SAP HANA.
  • The SAP HANA platform was positioned highest in the two of the three core categories Forrester used to evaluate vendors – current offering and strategy, and among the highest in the third category, market presence.
  • SAP is the only company to earn a 5/5 score for vision.
  • SAP is the only company to receive a 5/5 score for data management features and transaction capabilities.
  • SAP earned a 5/5 score for execution, market presence, customers, partners, revenue, performance and scale and analytics support.
  • SAP achieved the highest scores among all vendors in 3 criteria, and among the highest scores in 10 criteria.
