BI & analytics has always been about getting the right information to the right people at the right time. But as data volumes grow and timeframes for making decisions shorten, the importance of at-a-glance visualization of complex analytics has never been more vital.

As reported in Wired, Gartner projects that the volume of information is growing at an annual rate of 59% worldwide, and the number of organizations storing 1 petabyte of data has increased from 16 to 29% in the past three years.

According to WSJ, IDC projects spending on big-data analytics will increase from about $10 billion in 2012 to more than $32 billion in 2017. The 27% compound annual growth rate is far faster than the expected overall spending on corporate software, according to IDC.

Despite the increase in spending on big-data analytics, Gartner reports that through 2015, 85% of Fortune 500 organizations will be unable to exploit big data for competitive advantage.

It appears that too few companies are prepared for the challenges that come with big data, and for too long, big data projects have been more about technology than business outcomes.

SAP and SAP partners have worked mightily over the past several years to change this, and, today, a growing number of organizations are leveraging advances in BI & analytics from SAP to unleash the power of collective insight by delivering business intelligence, agile visualizations, and advanced predictive analytics to all users -- on any device or platform.

While much of the big-data hype has focused on storage and processing technologies, some of the most exciting, business-meaningful developments are in the fields of advanced visualization and predictive analytics.

SAP just recently announced innovations to help companies see a clearer picture from their data. Updates to SAP Lumira® software and the SAP® InfiniteInsight® solution extend capabilities in business intelligence, agile visualizations, and predictive analytics.

Updates to the latest version of SAP Lumira include the ability for users to access suggested visualizations automatically generated from their data, create interactive stories from their desktop, server or the cloud, and present insights with beautiful and engaging customizable infographics. 

Additionally, SAP Lumira can now be leveraged in combination with the 4.1 version of the SAP® BusinessObjects™ Business Intelligence (BI) suite to bring together enterprise BI and agile visualization capabilities which deliver scalability, performance and trusted decisions across an organization. 

InfiniteInsight, which came to SAP via its KXEN acquisition, allows line of business users to solve common predictive problems without the need for highly skilled data scientists.

InfiniteInsight 7.0 adds to its predictive analytics solution the ability to use geospatial dimensions as the predictive models and provides native support for large-number data sources -- Hadoop, Greenplum, etc.

Extending advanced analytics to more workers is vital to success in business. According to the, The “Exabyte Research Report” by London-based investment bank GP Bullhound, 17% of information processing individuals use big data analytics and the number is expected to progress to over one third of information workers by 2016.

Extending advanced analytics and stunning visualizations to C-level execs and frontline workers was the backdrop for the third annual ASUG Developer Wars that took place at this year's ASUG SAP BusinessObjects User Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

Guidelines for the ASUG Developer Wars were straightforward. Using data from Jobs for the Future (JFF), a non-profit organization that helps to “expand the college, career and life prospects of low-income youth and adults” across 25 states, Dev War teams consisting of 4 – 6 members had just two days to turn mountains of data into innovative and pragmatic analytic visuals that provided actionable insight into pressing business challenges and real-time answers to key business questions.

Tools at the teams’ disposal included SAP BusinessObjects 4.1 Analytics, including SAP Crystal Reports, Dashboards (formerly Xcelsius), SAP Lumira, and SAP Web Intelligence.

No pre-built components were allowed, and all work was conducted onsite in rooms dedicated to the ASUG Developer Wars.

Teams were judged on criteria including analytical functionality, design, ease of use, performance, expandability, and effectiveness in answering real-world business questions.

The NTT DATA team built a user interface (UI) to enhance the organization’s ability to quickly review KPIs of the students JFF serves in order to more effectively manage organizational resources, implement plans for growth, and provide better service for the students they serve.
